Stu is considered by many to the very best NL Hold em Poker gambler ever.
The 3 time World Poker Champion was born in New York in ‘53 and began betting poker prior to becomming a teenager.
The young bettor began betting gin and at the age of ten had won his initial gin rummy tournament, while on vacation with his mother and father. By the age of 14 the small poker genius had become a pro and dropped out of school.
In ‘54 Stu entered the history books by succeeding 10 grand in a gin tournament without sacrificing a single hand, a record which still stands in New York these days.
The fast talking superstar has been likened, in poker terms, to sporting greats like Joe Namath and Tiger Woods. Stu Ungar had a real talent for playing poker except in spite of his successes in Texas hold’em poker, he favored betting gin.
Stu once said that there may a number of day be a better NL Hold’em gambler than him except he couldn’t see how anyone could ever be a improved gin gambler.
In ‘80 Stu Ungar was put on the global map as one of the ideal Holdem Poker gamblers in the world when he was crowned World Poker Champ for the 1st time. Extraordinarily it was the first time he had entered the tournament.
The subsequent year he dismissed any suggestions that it had been a fluke, by successfully defending his crown. And in ‘97 Stu set the record by winning his 3rd World poker championship.
But this poker legend also battled with substance abuse and a year after winning his third title Stu Ungar died in his hotel room. According to doctors, he had died from a heart attack which was brought on by his lifestyle.
Stu had started with practically nothing but his ability and talent for the casino game which made this poker wonderful a millionaire many times over.
