Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he loved participating in numerous card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and headed to New York to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he played many hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He judged he could improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention more on the game.

The real improvement in his abilities happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often challenge one another. He had access into a number of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his strategic thinking skills. He used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
