Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he loved playing various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games while competing against his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and moved to New York to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on the game.

The definite improvement in his game happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would often challenge each other. He was able to access several of the best minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his cunning thinking techniques. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of NL hold’em.

He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP competition. She is one of the best women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
