Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he enjoyed playing various card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he played many hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He judged he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus more on the game.

The actual improvement in his game began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would regularly challenge one another. Howard had access into some of the best minds in chess. With their help, he would hone his strategic thinking techniques. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

He also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. He headed to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
