Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem difficult at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi low provides an exciting range of betting choices and seeing that you have many individuals trying for the high hand, along with a few shooting for the low. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
