Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he liked participating in different card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really competitive in these card games while playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and headed to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he played extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus more on poker.
The definite improvement in his game began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often compete against each other. He was able to access some of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his strategic thinking techniques. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. He headed to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
