Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more round of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same concept in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems difficult at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of play with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming range of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, as well as many shooting for the low. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
