Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he liked participating in various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games while competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York to play some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more rest and focus attention even more on poker.
The real improvement in his game happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would often challenge one another. He was able to access a number of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard would tweak his cunning thinking skills. He used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit hold’em.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard relocated to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
