Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed participating in various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in the above-mentioned card games while competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and lose most times. He earned some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He judged he might boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and concentrate more on poker.

The real advancement in his game happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would regularly wager against each other. Howard was able to access some of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.

Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker arena ever. Howard Lederer relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
