Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he enjoyed taking part in different card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to participate in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he played extensive hours and do not win most times. He made some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he could improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus more on poker.
The actual advancement in his abilities happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would often compete against each other. Howard was able to access several of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would tweak his logical thinking skills. He used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the greatest women players the poker world ever. Howard headed to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
